We should all be feminists assignment: free work
A free interpretation of the essay "We Should All Be Feminists" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The objective was to process a large amount of text. I chose to incorporate this into both a publication and a scarf. Each spread begins with a paragraph where a piece of text is repeatedly emphasized. The emphasized text consistently contains a negative message about the term feminism. The selected pieces of text were those that had stuck with me the most. Following this, there is always a spread with an illustration. These illustrations consist solely of text, but they are derived from the emphasized sentence on the previous page. In this way, the negative sentences are repeatedly highlighted in a whirlwind of illustrations. An impossible escape from anti-feminism. For the scarf, I chose to leave behind the negativity. Chimamanda mentions that she enjoys dressing in a feminine way but often sets it aside to be taken more seriously. The scarf represents an embrace of femininity. A concession.
